Day 7: Cliff Dweller's Lodge at the base of the Vermilion Cliffs, Marble Canyon, AZ. This fisherman's lodge is on the road to the north rim of the Grand Canyon, which is closed in winter, so this lodge wasn't crowded. It had a store where fishermen could buy supplies and a little restaurant where we had a surprisingly good home-cooked dinner that evening and fresh breakfast the next morning. I think only one other room was occupied.
We asked the manager if it would be okay for us to shoot some bottle rockets after dark. He said sure, if we aimed the rockets away
from the lodge and waited for the traffic to clear—that was the hard part. . .
we had to wait a long time for any traffic to come along so we could wait for it to clear.
We sat in camp chairs under a starry sky and shot off bottle rockets and waived
sparklers—with light hearts and full, warm bellies.
