Day 7: Rainbow Point, Bryce Canyon National Park. Allow me to
introduce one of my favorite toys—my Garmin global positioning system (GPS).
There is a little
disagreement (53') between my GPS and the sign regarding elevation, but I'm not
trying to land a small plane in the dark.
Let's see. . . it's 8:05:33 a.m.
on December 26. The sun rose at 7:41 a.m., about 25 minutes earlier, and
will set at 5:16 p.m. at that latitude. Our average driving speed on this trip has
been 54.8 mph and we have traveled 1,899 miles since we left home.
The car is facing almost due north. All of this information is displayed
and/or calculated by the internal computer based on signals collected about once
per second from a variety of satellites. The GPS also features a moving
map display and a variety of other neat navigation features. I got mine at
a garage sale, brand new, for less than $20. Lucky me.
