I arrived at Schwabisch Hall in the late afternoon and took a short drive before returning to my room for a nap--which I needed because I was jet-lagged from my overnight, transatlantic trip from Dallas. I didn't want to walk around the town in the heat and high humidity, so I decided to wait until after dark.
St. Michael's church (15th c.), centerpiece of the Marktplatz and its surrounding hotels and cafes was the place to be, but I couldn't get there. An opera was being performed on the 54 steps of the church, arrayed in a 70-meter arc. All entrances to the square were sealed and I had to wait until the opera was over before getting a peek. In this photo, the St. Michael's is still lit by theatrical lights from the opposite side of the square, while the stage crew is busy striking the sets. |
