Casa Grande peak near the basin, Big Bend National Park

Casa Grande, Big Bend National Park
The lower levels of Big Bend National Park, along the Rio Grande, tend to be arid and hot. However, there is a natural basin among the peaks in the center of the park, in which there is a lodge and a campground.

Within a short driving distance, you have to climb several thousand feet before descending into the basin. As you climb, the surrounding vegetation changes dramatically, from scruffy creosote bushes in the sandy desert to tall pines and alpine wildflowers.

Casa Grande, elevation 7,325 feet, is one of the high points surrounding the basin.
